Saturdays at the Woods
Spotlight on Theater:
The Power of the Playwright
Performing Arts Workshop for Youth in Grades 7-9

$70 for all six sessions / $12 for individual session

Spotlight on Theater! will introduce young people in grades 7-9 to a variety of opportunities for creative expression through the art form of theater. Participants will explore acting, writing and design for theater through introductory workshops that focus on the artistic process, having fun, and expressing themselves through the arts.
October 13: The Actor's Imaginative Instrument
Participant's learn all about the actor's instrument: their body. This workshop explores using the body, the voice and the mind to create defined characters in drama.
October 20: Broadway Musical Magic
Share in the fun and enthusiasm of songs that have defined Broadway in this week's celebration of musical theater. (Previous singing experience not required, come ready to have fun!)
October 27- Creepy Creature Makeup
Just in time for Halloween, learn how to create creepy monster make-up effects including wounds, scabs, scars, bruises and other grisly ingredients of macabre make-up design.
November 3: Dressing Them Up (Costume Design)
The clothes make the person, and in this workshop, participants learn how a designer goes about the process of making memorable costumes for the stage.
November 10: The Power of the Playwright
Create exciting monologues and soliloquies of drama by learning how the playwright uses their pen to heighten tension and to construct unique characters in a play.
November 17: Setting the Stage (Scenic Design)
The place where theater happens is the stage and the set designer is responsible for filling that world with its time, place and color. Participants will walk through the process of a scenic designer and create their own drawings of a set design.
Each workshop will include packets of supplemental materials, resources and suggestions on how participants can continue their learning and enjoyment of the theater form being explored that week. Crafts, games, and other arts exploration opportunities will be included, as well as a list of local arts organizations where they can plan special outings for a day of arts immersion.
Saturdays at the Woods is an interactive experience for young people in grades K-9 that offers them the opportunity to explore the performing arts in a fun, engaging environment.
