TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY AT BETHEL WOODS

 

December 2009 - The Museum at Bethel Woods, in conjunction with the National Council for History Education (NCHE), presented a three-day colloquium focused on the History of the Sixties as part of a six-year, federally funded Teaching American History grant program through Sullivan County BOCES. On the final day of the conference, teachers demonstrated their new knowledge and skills by performing in an Ed Sullivan-style variety show, with skits, musical acts, and more. John McEuen, of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was a special guest for the day.

HOLIDAY AND ME

 

December 2009 - Thirty-one children participated with their parents (or other caregiver) in two Holiday and Me music and arts workshops, directed by Tanya Cohen of The Janice Center. These interactive sessions were offered to two separate age groups, ages 0-4 and 5-9, and provided a day for kids and parents to make holiday music together. Participants made their own instruments - drums, shakers, maracas, etc. using typical craft materials. The children (and parents) then used their creations to make the sounds of the holidays while participating in a "music" circle that featured dancing, singing, playing and more. The music circle approach is designed to introduce and or cultivate musical and artistic interests in kindergartners through fourth grade.  

THE CRAGGS OF TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

September 2009 - The Heritage Celebration Series kicked off with a free performance by The Craggs, a five piece band from Tasmania, Australia playing acoustic folk music with a contemporary sound. Their performance also included an educational video presentation with a stunning display of wilderness images of Tasmania's landscape and wildlife, and discussions of history and culture. Additionally, there were Tasmanian-themed children's art and workshop activities.  

SULLIVAN COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COUNTY-WIDE PICNIC DAY

 

September 2009 - The County-wide Picnic Day at Bethel Woods officially closed Sullivan County's year-long Bicentennial celebration, with over 1,900 visitors attending the day-long event. This free family event featured historical re-enactors, historical and cultural displays from across Sullivan County, children's activities, lectures and discussions by Sam Yasgur, county historian John Conway, Woodstock festival promoter Michael Lang and radio personality Dennis Elsas and featured live music by 13 local performers and bands on six stages throughout the Bethel Woods site. Participating performers included:

MUSIC IS MAGIC

August 2009 - Bethel Woods and The Janice Center presented Music is Magic, a Music Together©® workshop series for children. This interactive music and movement workshop featured songs, beats, rhythms and props that introduces children ages 0-5 to music, with an emphasis on the sounds and styles of the '60s. Twenty-four children and their parents participated in this four-week program.

SULLIVAN COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COUNTY-WIDE PICNIC AUDITION SHOWCASE DAY
May 2009 - Dozens of musicians and bands from throughout Sullivan County gathered to audition for the opportunity to perform at the Bicentennial County-wide Picnic Day. The Audition Showcase Day was hosted by The Rockland House in Roscoe, NY. This event was open to the public and was enjoyed by many area residents.

Sullivan County Bicentennial County-wide Picnic Day events were presented in collaboration with the Sullivan County Bicentennial Committee.

ARTS IN EDUCATION CONFERENCE
May 2009 - Bethel Woods was proud to host The Sullivan County BOCES Arts in Education Conference for the second year in a row. In the keynote address, story teller Lisa Lipkin helped teachers think about using museum artifacts to tell stories, helping to engage students with the past and develop their own storytelling skills. Other presenters included John Cimino (Creative Leaps International), Kathryn Tufano (Catskill Arts Society), artist Sharon Molloy, and flutist Judith Pearce.

SCOUTS DAY

April 2009 - Girl Scouts in Brownies through Ambassadors were invited to Bethel Woods for a scavenger hunt, 1960s music, hands-on activities and more. All girls participated in badge-related activities and received a Sixties-style activity patch for attending.

EDUCATOR FREE DAY
April 2009 - Over 150 educators visited The Museum at Bethel Woods for the second annual Educator Free Day. The museum staff and members of the museum's Teacher Advisory Committee were available to discuss the museum's school-related programs and resources.

INAUGURATION DAY

On Tuesday, January 20, the museum launched its 2009 Education Programs with a special Inauguration Day event for local school groups. Approximately 400 local students visited The Museum at Bethel Woods on Inauguration Day to watch President Obama's inauguration and the surrounding ceremonies in Washington. Local high school bands and choral groups performed patriotic songs and music from American history. Amy Colón, a professor of American history at Sullivan County Community College, spoke to the students about the legacies of the 1960s in the 2009 election,

Prior to Inauguration Day, museum education staff visited local schools to talk with students about the significance of inaugurations in American history. Students learned about key participants at an inauguration, its location and traditions, and they read and discussed excerpts from the inaugural address of John F. Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

2008 

SULLIVAN COUNTY INTERACADEMIC LEAGUE

Fall 2008 - The Museum at Bethel Woods hosted the meets for the senior high and junior high Sullivan County Interacademic League (SCIL) year-long competition. Modeled after athletic competitions, SCIL is composed of various meets throughout the year, with teams from area schools competing with one another in academic contests. During the meets at The Museum at Bethel Woods, students participated in such activities as writing a manifesto for their times, based on SDS's Port Huron Statement; composing and performing a 1960s-style song; running as a Presidential candidate from the 1960's; a Frisbee competition and more. 

EDUCATOR FREE DAY
September 2008 - Nearly 70 educators attended the museum's first Educator Free Day, touring the new museum in order to explore its resources and meet the education staff.

August 2008 - In connection with the Boston Pops' performance at Bethel Woods, twenty-four students from the Liberty High School Band and 45 young musicians from the Goshen Youth Jazz Band were invited to take part in an hour-long educational performance and a workshop by James Emery & The String Trio of New York. This multi-faceted discussion about their music, origins, touring and recording, as well as improv and audience participation took place on the Terrace Stage.

July, 2008 - Bethel Woods presented a free encore performance by Grammy-Award winners, Terrance Simien and The Zydeco Experience. One of Louisiana's most respected Creole cultural ambassadors presented their lively and informative "Creole for Kids and The History of Zydeco". Attendees included children from Winston Day Camp, Sullivan West Central School, Callicoon Youth Group, Monticello Housing Authority, Fallsburg Central School, Orange County Youth Leadership Academy, Orange County Youth Bureau, Town of Bethel Youth Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension 4H and Girl Scout Troop #401 and Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center and Sullivan County B.O.C.E.S.

April 2008 - Bethel Woods hosted the Sullivan County BOCES Art in Education Conference, focusing on integrating arts into the curriculum. Participating teachers had the opportunity to tour the museum before it had opened to the general public.

MUSIC INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS 

 

September 2007 - One hundred Sullivan County Junior and Senior Girl Scouts enjoyed a multi-troop summit at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. These young scouts learned about the experiences of female professionals who work in the music performance industry.

August 2007 - Bethel Woods hosted "Youth At" Jazz," an interactive demonstration and jam session for more than 100 students led by premier chamber jazz ensemble, James Emery and The String Trio of New York. Participants also performed on the Terrace Stage and were guests of Bethel Woods at the evening's performance with jazz greats Earl Klugh, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
