Field Trips to The Museum at Bethel Woods
The Museum at Bethel Woods provides students with an understanding of the scope of recent history. Programs are available for elementary through high school students and meet New York content standards.
2010 - 2011 school programs
TIME TRAVELERS!
Younger Elementary (1st - 3rd grades)
In activity stations throughout the museum and grounds, students discover different aspects of the 1960s, including music of the times.
EXPLORE THE SIXTIES
Older Elementary (4th & 5th grades)
Through a scavenger hunt, tour of the Woodstock field, Sixties dance and more, students explore the tumultuous decade of the 1960s.
REVOLUTION EVOLUTION: HOW IS HISTORY MADE?
Middle/High School • Social Studies
In this history-based program, students use the museum collection and select primary documents to research and produce a 1960s newscast, covering major events of the area.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN
Middle/High School • Civic Engagement
This program draws parallels between social issues of the 1960s and life today, encouraging students to be agents of positive change.
WE'RE ALL PLAYING IN THE SAME BAND
Middle/High School • Music/Language Arts
Adaptable for music or English classes, this program uses songs from the 1960s as historical documents through which students can learn about the past.
BEHIND THE SCENES AT BETHEL WOODS
Middle/High School • Career Exploration
Offered October and April-June only
Through a tour of the Bethel Woods site, including the Pavilion, grounds, and museum, students learn about all the jobs that keep the facility running.
PEACE, LOVE AND COMPETITION
Middle/High School • Team Building
Offered October and April-June only
In small teams, students compete in a variety of Sixties activities, including an academic scavenger hunt, song writing, Frisbee competition and more.
Note: This program runs 4 hours.
TOUR THE HISTORIC WOODSTOCK FIELD
All Ages
Absorb the spirit of the site and learn about the locations of many key elements of the Woodstock festival in a staff-led tour of the historic field.
SELF-GUIDED VISIT
All Ages
Your group is always welcome to tour the museum on your own, with no staff interaction. The museum has a strong narrative component, and students remain engaged with multiple videos, music stations, artifacts, interactive experiences and more. Plan to spend at least 1.5 hours in the museum galleries.

COST
Museum admission is $5 per person for all members of a pre-registered education group. There is a $2 per person program fee if you choose to participate in a program or have a staff-led tour of the Historic Field.
TRANSPORTATION
Bethel Woods is able to offer reduced-price bus transportation for field trips thanks to the generosity of Rolling V Bus Corporation. Sullivan County schools receive a flat rate of $125 per 44-passenger bus. Out-of-county schools may qualify for a reduced rate based on geographic location. Please let us know if you would like information on this opportunity.
TIME FRAME
Programs are generally run on Thursdays and Fridays, October through December and April through June. Groups can arrive as early as 9:00 a.m. to do a program. Special arrangements can sometimes be made for groups who cannot get to the museum during these times.
CHAPERONE POLICY
All field trips (including self-guided tours) should maintain a ratio of at least one chaperone per ten students. Chaperones are expected to play an integral role in the field trip, including assisting with the activities and maintaining control of students.
GROUP SIZE
The recommended group size for a school program is 30-40 students. We have a minimum requirement of 15 students to run a school program. Our programs can accommodate groups up to 120 in size, though these groups require special arrangements and should be booked well in advance. There are no size limits for a self-guided visit.
