world stage series

The World Stage Series for youth and families will feature several performances this year. The World Stage Series is an initiative with a goal to empower youth to be positive, engaged members of their community and the world, by fostering a respect for themselves and their talents, as well as exploring the diversity in the world.

Thursday, April 5 - Amato Opera-in-Brief: Hansel & Gretel (Special school performance)
Presented by Manhattan School of Music

Manhattan School of Music is pleased to present its Amato Opera-in-Brief performance of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel to students in grades 2-6. Prior to the performance, the cast will introduce and explain key vocabulary and elements of the opera. Following this preview, they will present a 40-minute version of the opera, complete with scenery and costumes. The performance will conclude with a Q & A between the audience and cast. Sunday, April 22 - Indian Music: Ray Spiegel & Aashish Khan

This performance of traditional Indian music is perfect for youth, families, and adults. Ray Spiegel and Aashish Khan are both individually distiniguished artists in traditional Indian music. Spiegel trained with Tabla Master Ustad Alla Rahka and has received grant awards from the NEH and Smithsonian Institution to further his studies. He has performed and taught as many universities in the United States. Khan is considered among the handful of India's greatest living sarode players, and has played the instrument since age five. Today he is a respected uru and teacher, and in addition to a career as a concert artist and composer, he also teaches students across the world. More Information

Friday, May 18 - Big Drum/Small World: Presented by JazzReach (Special school performance)

This immersive, globally themed multi-media program features performances by prominent, internationally recognized jazz composers hailing from countries as diverse as, West Africa, Israel, Cuba, Puerto Rico, India, and the United States.

The program also features fun, short video interludes that offer biographical background on each of the project's composers and commentary on the various ways that both the American jazz tradition and their individual cultural heritages have informed and inspired their respective visions and artistic sensibilities.

The objectives of Big Drum / Small World are to promote the value of creative collaboration and the unique way that jazz provides a forum to explore our differences, share ideas and discover common ground. More Information

Sunday, May 20 - Yihan Chen

A mesmerizing master of the pipa (ancient four-stringed Chinese Lute), Yihan Chen is a noted performer and has collaborated with celebrated artists around the world. She frequently participates in international festivals as well. Her performance will include an interactive segment with children and rythym instruction. More Information

Family Days provide families with a way to interact and engage with the resources at Bethel Woods. Based on the museum's permanent and special exhibits, family days include music, family-friendly activities, and provide opportunities for families to interact with each other in an educational and engaging environment.

music and arts workshop series

Music is Magic: 4 Weeks of Kids and Music is a Music Together©® style program by Bethel Woods and The Janice Center. This interactive music and movement workshop features songs, beats, rhythms and props and introduces children to music, with an emphasis on the sounds and styles of the '60s.
